This scene breaks me, and not just because it’s the reunion we’ve been waiting for for twenty four episodes. Kaneki hides. He’s not just holding his face in grief or something. He’s clutching at it to cover his ghoul eye. They must have been staring at each other for upward of twenty seconds, but it’s still Kaneki’s instinct to cover his glowing red eye from Hide. It’s just so heart breaking. Throughout the series Kaneki has been hiding from Hide to protect him. This speaks to what Hide says later; that Kaneki is always taken it upon himself to help and protect others. And yet Hide knew; he knew and he never abandoned Kaneki. Never. He joined CCG to protect Kaneki. He always had Kaneki’s back and he rescued him. He carried him to Antieku and made him fucking coffee. And all the while he’s bleeding the fuck out all over the floor. And it’s awful. And it breaks me.
